This the beginning of a series called, “Paranormal Obsession”, where I talk about different obsessions within paranormal. It won’t be done on consecutive weeks, but will be 3 weeks now until the end of May when I will host a giveaway for those that commented.
Past Trends:
I’m sure there are many trends before my time, but I’ll start with Harry Potter. After Harry Potter had a hint of success fantasy got boost. Books with dragons, boys, and fantastical times were the trend for a couple of years.
Then Twilight came on the scene and books were all about vampires and a surprising at least to me was that we also saw a huge uptick in the amount of werewolves. *Call me skeptical on the whole furry guy phenomenon.*
Dystopian has been taking off for the last few months and I hear many say that it’s a trend that is around to stay. Personally, I love it. I hope it does, but I don’t think it’s the trend that is coming upon us. I think it’s going to be dying out. Though not dead as the previous haven’t died out and they’ve been around for centuries.
What's next?
Mythology I believe is the next big thing. With such successes as The Goddess Test and Starcrossed, it’s just resurging, but I think it could rival the Harry Potter success. Meaning, it’ll be huge, but it’ll die out quickly.
I’m most excited about the mythology trend as mythology has always interested me and I’d read both The Iliad and the Odyssey before I was out of grade school. The re-imagining of these stories is quite interesting and often can take me on a journey that other paranormal stories just don’t. They have history, intrigue, and overall are just good stories.
Question of the day:
What is your favorite trend of the last two decades? What do you think will be the next big trend? How do you feel about the trends in paranormal fiction?

My favorite trend has to be one you did not mention and that is Time Travel... One of my favorite authors is Diana Gabaldon and she and Brenda Joyce have both written series that deal with in Gabaldon's case humans who can travel back and forth in time and in Joyce books Vampire and Witches who do so... While there may not be many books on this particular subject it is one that has always fascinated me ever since read HG Wells "Time Machine"...
ReplyDeleteThe newest trend that fascinates me is the same as yours Rie, I love Mythology too... I have many books in my To Be Read shelves by authors today that are mythology based reads and I look forward to getting to each and everyone of them to see how their different perspectives are handled and which of them become my favorites...
I absolutely love time travel. Have you read A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great thought-provoking comment!
I love the new dystopian trend, certainly. But I really wish MORE epic fantasy would come out again. I just read "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss again and want to see more of that kind of stuff on the shelves! I think the trends in paranormal fiction will likely keep changing as the market audience keeps changing. But really, it might just become this cyclical thing, too.
ReplyDeleteI've absolutely loved paranormal romance. My two favourite things put together! What a treat. It's difficult to find unique PR but when you do….JACKPOT! But lately I have really been obsessing over dystopian. It's so good. I don't understand how some people don't like it! <3
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on mythology being the next big thing. I've noticed quite a few upcoming that deal with the subject. Luckily this is something that I love also. Since I was little, I've had a fascination with all things myth and legend! I'd like to be a fly on the wall watching all of the Greek gods..........
I can't seem to get enough of the faerie trend. I've been reading it since I was in middle school, mostly starting with Holly Black and Francesca Lia Block. Every time I see something faerie related it seems I have to get it. Also ghosts. If I hear about a good ghost book, I have to get it. I think my fascination started when I was really young, because of my dad. Now that he's not around anymore, it seems as though I've started liking a lot of the things he used to like. As for the next trend, I'm not quite sure, really. Mythology is a good bet. The vampire and werewolf thing has been overdone. I like that I've been seeing more zombie books, too.
