Warning: This may be rambling and snarky.
Today, I talk about my favorite way of buying books and why it sucks. I primarily buy and trade books online. This is probably because I grew up in a town with 2,000 people with no bookstore for over 50 miles.
I’ve done a ton of business with amazon. I’ve sold, traded in, and bought a ton of books from them. I’ve also been quite infatuated with Paperbackswap, but I’ve encountered issues with some rudeness on their behalf that has turned me off of it. My current obsession is E-book Fling. It’s genius and inexpensive. Plus, I don’t really reread books so 14 days is plenty of time.
So, yes I’m a bit of the online buyer when it comes to books.
Last night, I was in Wal-mart. Yes, I know their book selection sucks and I didn’t buy any books. But I looked longingly at them even though I currently have around 20 books I should be reading within the next month. Which btw…is not going to happen.
Waiting days to find the book you ordered online on your front porch is not exactly the same feeling you get when you stand among thousands of tomes.
So if Wal-mart book section can get my OMG, there’s books! Can you imagine what I’m like in the impressively huge Barnes and Noble.
It’s the closest thing to heaven I’m likely to get, well at least for the next 50 odd years. *Knocks on wood*
I need to start buying more books at bookstores. Cause seriously do we want all the bookstores to end up like Borders. I saw a closed one yesterday and it filled me with sadness.
Which way of buying books is more enjoyable for you? Can you imagine a world without bookstores? Where do you get the “OMG! There’s books!” feeling?

Hope the Read-A-thon is going well. I'm participating too.
ReplyDeleteI only have one chain bookstore within 30 miles of m and it might close because its a Borders! :( Great discussion!
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, department stores like Big W and Kmart always have a ton of good books. WHO KNEW?! I feel like emptying my bank account there every time I walk by the book section! I buy most of my books online but I definitely love bookstore shopping more. Great atmosphere and selection, as well as the awesome feeling of being surrounded by hundreds of books that you really want to buy but can't. I simply buy from TBD because it's so much cheaper but if not…you'd find me in bookstores everyday! Really scared that print books in general will be wiped out completely, let alone bookstores!
