All her life, Seattle reporter Kristin Reed sought her breakout story. She never thought she'd find it in the crimson lair of a real-life creature of the night. Kristin never believed vampires existed—until with dark brooding eyes and a decadent chocolate scent, Dmitri Dionotte called out to her…
Dmitri and his clan's true nature was cloaked in secrecy until a warring vampire order threatened their existence. Kristin was just the woman he needed. She couldn't resist their story…or Dmitri. Her blood pulsed hot and furious when he touched her, and with his kiss, all logic fled. But each night she spent with her vampire lover brought her closer to death and destruction. A death not even an immortal could triumph over.
Can you tell me in 20 words or less what your book is about?
Vampires and the virus that creates them are about to be exposed by an ambitious reporter, unleashing chaos.
What is it about vampires that intrigue you?
I actually became interested in vampires after watching the movie Lost Boys as a teen, about the same time I started writing romances. I suppose what intrigues me most is the same thing that intrigues many other people, the idea of immortality. It gets to the very root of human existence which is a desire to survive above all else. And yet, when you really start peeling it apart, vampires are some of the most troubled immortals out there because they aren't in some afterlife or another location like the ancient gods of Olympus. They're still here, on Earth, only with hundreds or thousands of years of emotional baggage to carry around. That makes them interesting to me and gives me all kinds of fodder for my stories.
From your blurb: with dark brooding eyes and a decadent chocolate scent, Dmitri Dionotte called out to her. The hero smells of chocolate? That would be impossible to resist, for me at least. What is your favorite type of chocolate?
Actually my vampires change to suit the deepest fantasies of their prey, in this case my heroine, Kristin, is addicted to chocolate, so yes, Dmitri smells like chocolate. You seriously expect me to pick one type of chocolate as a favorite? I like all different kinds. I like really creamy smooth milk chocolate. I like dark chocolate spiked with exotic things like lavender or chilies or mint. I like chocolate with caramel. I like fudge and truffels. I like chips of white chocolate. I like hot chocolate. In fact if you go to my website, under the Extras link, you'll find a Delicious Links. I've got all kinds of chocolate links listed under there. My one saving grace from eating too much chocolate is drinking a lot of chocolate mint tea (with milk and sweetner it's a dessert it'self).
Kristin is a journalist and from your bio I see that you are as well. How did this influence your writing?
Let's just say that the atmosphere in the newsroom Kristen experiences wasn't too far from the truth. It was part of the reason I ended up switching majors in college from straight journalism to mass communications and went into Public Relations instead.
What is your current WIP (Work in Progress)? Can you tell us a little about it?
My current work-in-progress is another story set in this same world as a continuation of the Sons of Midnight mini-series for Harlequin Nocturne. Right now it's titled The Vampire Half-breed (but that's subject to change). Slade Donovan is a vampire who doesn't remember how he came to be at the Cascade Clan, all he knows is that when state wildlife biologist Raina Redwing comes around asking about the strange wolves in the area she sets him off in all the wrong ways and it starts a chain of events that will cause his nice, solid existence among the clan to go up faster than the little pig's straw house set ablaze by the big bad wolf.
Do you have a favorite place to sit and write? Where is your favorite place to read?
I mostly write in my office in the turret of my Victorian-style house. My office has five windows which look out into the tall evergreen fir trees, the horse pasture and the apple, cherry and pear trees that line our driveway. The remaining walls are taken up with bookshelves crammed full of research materials, favorite books and odd bits of things that make me smile (like my teddy bear collection on top of the bookcases). I really enjoy writing in my office, but I don't read in there at all. For reading I prefer to cuddle up on the loveseat in the living room where the wood stove is located, with the windows that face south at my back so I get all kinds of natural light over my shoulder. That way I get a toasty fire, lots of light and a cushy place I can put my feet up.
As a reader, do you read in the same genre as you write? What is your current paranormal obsession?---
Actually I do read some in the same genre, but I also read a lot of other things including history books, biographies, books on magic and herbs, YA and how-to books. It helps keep my brain humming. My current paranormal obsession is split between Gail Carriger's Souless steampunk series (who can resist vampires and werewolves running about London in bustles and top hats?) and Yasmin Galenorn's Otherworld series (her half fae-half human D'Artigo sisters totally kick ass.)
