RUNHi, my name is Dani and I adore wolves. In fact, I know the exact time and place I fell in love with wolves. It was a sunny Sunday morning and I was at home on my little farm in northern Canada … and a pack of 7 or 8 wolves loped across my yard right in front of me!
Shadow and moonlight merge beneath her bare feet, the forest floor blurring as she flees the dogs and torches. Werewolf, monster -- those are the names given her kind by the humans who hate them.
HUNT
Kenzie Macleod has spent her whole life hiding what she is, and she’s not about to open up to any man, even one as powerfully attractive as wildlife expert Josh Talarkoteen. But legend says that a Changeling cannot escape the call of her true mate, even in the wilderness of backcountry Alaska.
MATE
An isolated archeological site, a terrified Changeling cub, a secretive research center -- as Kenzie and Josh face the ultimate betrayal, his obsidian eyes promise untold pleasure and hint at dark secrets of his ow
The wolves were unconcerned by my presence. Graceful and unhurried, they seemed to be floating along the ground rather than touching it. Their mouths were open and grinning, their tongues lolling, and they bumped each other’s shoulders amiably. But what impacted me the most was the powerful impression that the wolves were happy.
The pack entered the timber and disappeared into the ravine beyond, and I stood there for a very long time in awe and wonder. I guess it was no surprise when a family of shapeshifters – or Changelings, as they prefer to be called – popped up in my stories. Able to become wolves at will, the Macleods fled Scotland for a new life in northern Canada.
But back to natural wolves. There is so much to admire about them! First and foremost, they’re incredibly intelligent. And it’s true that they mate for life. A pack is made up of the mother and father wolves (the alpha male and female), their grown pups from the last few years and other lower-ranking wolves. A wolf pack is a close-knit group, with strong relationships and social bonds. They show affection to each other and will even sacrifice themselves to protect their family!
These bonds are most noticeable when pups are born. Usually only the alpha pair breed, but the entire pack takes responsibility for feeding and guarding the young. All of the wolves take turns babysitting the pups while the rest of the pack is out hunting. If anything happens to the alphas, the pack will take care of the young wolves. They are mature at about 10 months of age, and will usually remain with the pack.
Such close relationships spark complex communication. Wolves have an amazing repertoire of sounds – barks, whines, growls and howls. But we have only recently learned that wolves have facial expressions, just like humans! In fact, the colors of a wolf’s face, the “mask” of light and dark fur that often frames the eyes and mouth so beautifully has a purpose – it makes it easier for their expressions to be read by other wolves!
There is so much more I could tell you about wolves, but it won’t all fit in this blog. You’ll find a lot of wolf facts sprinkled throughout my Changeling books – I’ve done a lot of research to make sure that what I write about wolves in my novels is absolutely true. (Chalk it up to my former career as a newspaper editor – I have an obsession with facts!)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite animal is a horse. I have loved watching them since I was a small child and the wild horses that my uncle brought back from Wyoming ran free in their meadow. So graceful! They are a 'pack' animal too. (-;

We are talking about real animals right? I already have a dog since i love dongs...but lions were always my favorite :)
ReplyDeleteI love cats, mostly because I have a lot of fun personifying them. You can do the same with dogs, but there's something about a cat that lends itself to fantasies of arrogance and disdain. Then again, it's probably not fantasy at all.
ReplyDeleteI am just a sucker for animals. I love them all, both domestic and wild. I generally always have a cat &/or dog (right now 2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 bird). In the past, I have also fostered a raccoon due to mother being killed. I generally have animals that have been either mistreated by abuse &/or neglect by others.
ReplyDeleteI'm a cat person all the way :D I've had at least of dozen of them throughout my life, and I love the variety of personalities they all had :P Such saucy creatures!
ReplyDeleteI have a dog but I like cats more even though I am allergic to them. I think I like them more because they are more independent.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE WOLVES!! They are so beautiful and wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for all animals, domestic and the wild kingdom. Well, except for snakes that is. I have 2 rottweilers that I so adore and classify them my kids (literally). TY for the great giveaway chance! @SacredmOOn1
ReplyDeleteMy favorite has always been horses, although I've always had cats and dogs too. I wish I had lots of money, I would have one of those sanctuary's where I could keep elephants, I think they are amazing animals.

Living in the country has enabled us to have pets all my life. My kids grew up with 4 to 5 dogs, a half dozen cats & kittens, chickens, and a various assortment of frogs, fish & small rodents. My favorite has to be the dogs. Their loyalty of staying with the kids as they tromped through acres of wooded landscape on their explorations, protecting them from snakes and getting them back home before dark, is upper most in my mind. Now that the kids are grown, they follow me throughout our property when I am working in the flowerbeds or mowing the yard or fields. They keep an eagle eye on me and I know that should a stranger approach or an accident happen that they would pull their "Timmy's in the well" routine out and save me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite animals are penguins. I even have a penguin tattoo
ReplyDeleteFantastic giveaway! Thank you for inviting me!

I love wolf's and think they are some of the most beautiful animals around and love how their bonding and pack survival methods are. Us humans should really take a look at how they lead their lives and we might have a better world.
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds so good and I would love to win it. Thank you for the oportunity.

ReplyDeleteI love horses, dogs and wolves but we have a cat that I just absolutely adore, she is fluffy and loves to snuggle.
ReplyDeleteI've always been torn between what animals are my favorites. I love cats, but at the same time I love some of the more exotic animals as well. Koalas, pandas. I've never really decided on a favorite.
ReplyDeleteI love cats but since I'm allergic to them I stick with dogs.
ReplyDeleteWell wild animals it would have to be large cats love them all, white tigers, snow leopards, Canada Lynxes let me pet one any-day! And house pet wise.. is again cats I simply couldn't live without them they brighten my day make me smile, wonderful animals.
ReplyDeleteI love cats, have had quite a few in my married life. Shifters though, I love wolves.
ReplyDeleteMy little Jack Russell "Chloe" is my favorite "beast". She had separation anxiety, they told us when we got her from a shelter. She has to be in whatever room I'm in or where she can see me. She often lays on the couch next to the woodstove cause she can see me in the kitchen, living room and laundry room from there. In the house she is mild and meek and outside she's a wholly terror. She's as loyal as any wolf ever was so she's my changeling.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite are tigers.
ReplyDeleteI'd say my favorite beast would be a Highlander lol. But f he has to be on all fours I'll say a gorgeous Panther.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. I enjoyed reading about the facts you researched for the wolves Dani.
