Okay, so dystopian isn’t exactly paranormal.

“In times of tyranny and injustice when law oppresses the people, the outlaw takes his place in history.”- Robin Hood the movie

I think dystopian is a valuable genre at the moment, not simply because it is entertaining, but because in it we see how our choices could affect our future. It also shows how even in the worst possible surroundings one person, one group, can make a difference.

Dystopian shows the world at it’s worst, the greediest, the most corrupt, the most cowardly. In this world there is the heroine or hero, a person or a group of people that stand up against this and say “No more.” It’s a strength we dearly need in today’s society and is a strength we are currently seeing in the revolutions in the Middle East.

Fiction is not only a place of wondrous dreams, but of the most imbedded fears. And in this we find a place where whatever is bothering us can be solved. Nothing is insurmountable.
This is why I love dystopian.

Today’s Question:

Why do you love dystopian?

  1. I love Dystopian novels that make sense. Meaning we could see it happen in the future, it's possible to happen unless we do something about it, it's like a reminder :)

  2. Like you said, dystopian novels are great in that we are able to explore this whole different society which amplifies the bad parts of our society now by a thousand. It's also just so different and is the perfect setting for an author to write something totally crazy and unacceptable anywhere else! The possibility of the world turning this way is also an interesting concept!

  3.  I like dystopian novels for the same reason you do. It shows a possible future if we make certain wrong choices and it shows us how choices can affect things.future if we make certain wrong choices and it shows us how choices can affect things.

  4. I pretty much agree with you. What I like most about it is that there is ALWAYS a hero/ine or a group of people who are not afraid to stand up to the system - or maybe they are afraid, but are able to suppress their fear for the greater good and sacrifice for others. Dystopian novels always have a strong hero/ine and that makes me love the character immediately because I dont like weak and whiny characters. Also, another thing I like - dystopian novels portray various versions of this world. The authors of DN are very original, in terms of creating the conditions which people have to live in.

  6. Like a lot of other people, I love dystopian novels because they make you actually think. These things could happen and for a lt of the novel premises we are well on our way to making these stories a reality. By fictionalizing these warnings it's a way to get them across to the masses without seeming preachy.

  7. Well, I agree.  I think it shows us what consequences some of our actions could have in the future.  It makes us think.  And that's one big reason why I love it.  It's also entertaining, so that's what keeps me reading it!

  8. Dystopian novels are becoming my fav to read. I like how they get you thinking about society and where it's going or could go. It's intriguing really to see how the characters relate to the environments the authors create.

I agree with you about how dystopia shows the world. It does show what could happen to us. In a way, it's like seeing the future. By that, I mean, what would happen if we actually tried to take a stand and speak out against, or for, things. I love dystopia novels because they give me hope, even if it's a fiction book, there's still some hope. :]

  10. Dystopian novels make you think more and, despite the initial bleakness, there is usually a glimmer of hope at the end

  11. Everything you said is absolutely true.  Dystopian novels are intriguing for multiple reasons.  The first reason being that they actually make you think- and sometimes fear- what would happen if we keep mistreating each other and our world.  Of course, each book is the authors interpretation of what could happen if the citizens made certain choices, but there's always a possibility of the world we have now crumbling to pieces, leaving something worse behind.  I love them because they're raw, sometimes sad and twisted, and sometimes they end with you letting out a sigh of relief.

  12. Wow, what a great answer! I'm just getting into the Dystopian genre, actually. The Handmaid's Tale is my book club's choice this month, and I'm going to read Divergent soon as well, along with some others. I just love YA. I hope I enjoy this genre as much as you do!
