Austine from The Magick Pen has won the 200 follower giveaway!

Please respond within 48 hours or I’ll have to choice a new winner.

October 1st 2008, Scholastic, Inc.
374 pgs., E-book
Borrowed from E-book Fling
First in the Hunger Games Series
Young Adult Fiction

From Goodreads:

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Opinion:

I wanted to mention how I came about reading this book. I detest the cover and I pick books primarily on the cover. I know, I know don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Twitter and reviews have been saying how fabulous these books are and I had free credits from e-book fling so I decided I’d take all the advice and read it.

Cue the gushing.

OMG! I freaking loved this book. It’s already one of those books that mean so much to me. Like a good friend.

I don’t cry at books, very often. Reading the first fifty pages of this I cried the entire time. Not sobbing tears like in book five of Harry Potter, but those tears you don’t even know are there until you taste salt in your mouth. She is an amazingly strong young girl with a tale that distinguishes her from most of YA.
She loves her family in such a deep way that she has resumed responsibility of them all by the age of 11. She is smart and resourceful and so unassuming.

The world in which this book is placed is not a world that is so out of realm of possibility. The world is a bit of history, a bit of present, and a bit of a dark possible future.

Peeta is a nice boy, a little niave, a little more sheltered. He portrays strength we aren't suspecting throughout.
This is a book that I will be buying and I have already requested to borrow the next two in the series and will be adding this series to my personal library in the near future.

Rating: 5+/5

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme by Breaking the Spine that allows us bloggers a chance to spotlight upcoming books that we are dying to read.

This week I’m waiting on:

Goodreads:

After the death of her free-spirited mother, sixteen-year-old Alex Lee must leave her home in northern California to live with her wealthy grandmother in Savannah, Georgia. By birth, Alex is a rightful, if unwilling, member of the Magnolia League, Savannah's long-standing debutante society. She quickly discovers that the Magnolias have made a pact with a legendary hoodoo family, the Buzzards. The Magnolias enjoy youth, beauty and power. But at what price?

As in her popular adult novels, Crouch's poignant and humorous voice shines in this seductively atmospheric story about girls growing up in a magical Southern city.

Why I'm waiting:

The cover is amazing!

And it seems like Pretty Little Liars with paranormal thrown in.

Sorry, I didn’t have anything up for today until now. I read Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (Book 2 of the Hunger Games Triology) until 4 a.m and then had class at 9, can we say groggy?

I just want update you guys on a couple of things and tell you a few things that I have planned for the coming weeks.

Update:

I had a tremendous turn out for the 200 follower giveaway. Thanks everyone so much for spreading the word and for following me in the first place.

Planned Goodies:

Giveaways: On April 1st I’ll announce the winner of the 200 follower giveaway and start a new giveaway. I haven’t heard word back on the Japan Hop Giveaway, so I’m not sure it’s still in go, but regardless I’ll be putting a giveaway with bonus points for contributing. I know many of you can’t afford this, so I won’t make it for a ton of points.

Reading Challenge: I have a reading challenge that I will be announcing on April 5th. I really hope I have a good turn out for this reading challenge as I support this cause with all my heart. Diversity is good.

Design: On April 7th, I’ll be rolling out a new website Mission to Design. I’ve found that I have a real love for graphic design and I'll start creating custom ones and giving away a ton of freebies. I’ll probably make a small post about this on April 7th. If you’d like me to design something for you in the interim I’ll be happy to design anything you need for free so I can build my portfolio. So simply comment or contact me and I’ll do your entire blog or simply a favicon for you. I’m limiting this at (10) free designs.

So that's it for me.

Releases today!*

  March 28th 2011 , Harlequin Teen
384 pgs., E-galley
Netgalley
Standalone
Young Adult Fiction

From Goodreads:

Two years ago I did a terrible thing. I accused my best friend of being a killer after seeing him kneeling over a girl's body. That moment and that outcast boy still haunt me.

Now my mom is forcing me back to Oklahoma and I can't get White Bird out of my mind. But when I find out he's not in juvie—that he's in a mental hospital, locked in his tormented brain at the worst moment of his life—I can't turn my back on him again.

No one wants me to see him. My mom doesn't trust me. The town sheriff still thinks I was involved in the murder. And the other kids who knew the dead girl are after me.

I'm as trapped as White Bird. And when I touch him, I get sucked into his living hell, a vision quest of horrifying demons and illusions of that night. Everything about him scares me now, but I have to do something. This time I can't be a coward. This time I have to be his friend.

Even if I get lost, as well…

Tale:
Before I get to the review I want to tell you an Oklahoman legend that we open up into in the very beginning of this book although it is altered.

There is a bridge in a town not far from where I grew up that is very eerie. As you drive over it you feel a sense of not being alone. Of great sadness.

You see on this bridge something terrible happened when Oklahoma was a wee baby of a state. A man had a daughter; when she was old enough to bear children he got her pregnant again and again.

Each of these children would die in their infancy, some say it was simply still born babes due to genetics, but if you ask some of the older generation they’ll tell you that she murdered each and every one of her babies as she saw them as abominations.

After the baby was dead she would scurry off to this bridge and drop the baby over the side. They named this bridge Cry Baby Bridge.

Some say her presence still lingers here and you can hear a babies cries coming from below the bridge and woman in white standing on the edge crying.

Opinion:
Jordan Dane’s writing brought me back to home. Her imagery is great. The hot summer sun, the dusty plains, the small antiquated towns. And then she had the people be complete racists. Native Americans are a part of life in Oklahoma. It’s not like Nevada or New Mexico where reservations are these beaten up towns with serious problems.

Brenna is a dark and twisty teen. One that I could understand quickly. She’s brave unlike many her age. Her selfless acts bring her friend back to her in more ways than one.

Her and her mother’s relationship get repaired with trust and truths. Joe is a needed in so many ways and until he appears fear is rampant for Brenna.

There is so much more to say about this book, but it would all be spoilers. So I'll say this, the villians are dynamic, the protag is heartfelt, and the land is home.

If you liked Speak, you’d love this book.

Rating:
4/5

Worth the mission.
Aspects could be better, but it was a good book overall.

Guys, don’t forget that the 200 Follower Giveaway continues on until April 1st, a week from today.

Follow Friday is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee's View.
This week's question:

Inspired by the inane twitter trend of #100FACTSABOUTME, GIVE US FIVE BOOK RELATED SILLY FACTS ABOUT YOU.

Answer:
1. I kinda jump for glee every time a book arrives in the mail. I’m sure the neighbors think I’m insane.
2. I have books in almost every room of the house. This drives my husband nuts. He is a clean freak. I like clutter.
3. My dog is my only reading companion and it’s the only time she’s allowed in the bed.
4. I’ve been known to throw books at the wall when I get sick of the character, plotline, or writing. Sadly this cannot translate into e-books.
5. I used to read while driving to school which was 75 miles from home.

Book Blogger Hop
This week's question is:
"If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?"

Answer:

I wouldn't swap my life with that of a book, I'm way too content in my current life.

Photobucket

Hosted by: Bitten by Paranormal Romance

 This week's question:
Where is you favorite place to buy or swap books?

Answer:
Paperbackswap. For sure.

And a new one!

Question:

Writing Negative Reviews: Are you guilty of it?

Answer:

Yes, I give honest opinions about books and some books are not for me. I don't have many books that I've given a negative review, but I have indeed given negative reviews in my life as a blogger. When I dislike something I always to give precise reasons as to why.

January 25th 2011, Berkley Sensation
324 pgs. , Paperback
Library Copy
Third in the Guild Hunter series
Adult Fiction

From Goodreads:

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil…

A vampire has attacked a girls’ school—the assault one of sheer, vicious madness—and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders. The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.

An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…

Opinion:

As always Nalini Singh is a master with playing with words to make you feel and to make you see. There is no power such as love and she makes this apparent with every verse of her beautiful prose.

Elana is back among the living. The mortals her friends, her city, her family. She is also still part of the immortal world and she has to straddle the two parts of herself.

Raphael still at times tries to control Elana as he has always been powerful, but she never allows it which makes her an equal among those that are of the most powerful.

She is understanding more of the pain that her father is in and although he made terrible choices he is real. He is in so much pain that is palatable.

This book certainly pulls on the heart strings.

Rating:

Mission accomplished; read again and again.
A masterful piece of writing.

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme by Breaking the Spine that allows us wonderful bloggers a chance to spotlight upcoming books that we are dying to read.

This week I’m waiting on:

September 15th, 2011

Goodreads:

Nick's life as a CIA spy should be fulfilling, but it has only given him unhappiness, a wife who committed suicide, and two daughters who resent everything he has become. Now, stuck in the Amazon on the last mission of his career, he must track down Matheus Ferreira, a drug lord and terrorist the United States has tried to bring down for years. If he succeeds, he'll have the chance to start his life over again. Just when he's on the brink of catching Ferreira, he's framed for a murder that turns his world upside down. His only chance of survival lies in West Virginia, where Lilian Love, a woman from his past, owns the secluded Monarch Inn.

He's safe, but not for long.

Why I'm waiting:

As you can see this isn’t my usual genre, but Michelle has such a lyrical tone that I simply must read it.

Read all the way through for a surprise.

First, if you need an graphic editing software. I suggest the freeware Paint.net.

Next find an image you want to use. If you are wanting to use an image off your site and don’t currently have it saved on your hard drive, hit Crtl+Prt Sc this will take a snapshot of your background.

If you don’t have an image you want to use I suggest stock exchange. It has free royalty free images.

Now you have your image from whatever source. You need to resize it to the dimensions you want it. A good way to find out what size image you need is to open template designer and find out the width of the sidebar in which you are planning to put the grab button. Or download the extension (Opera-Omeasure, Google Chrome and Firefox (MeasureIt) these simple extension allows you to see what the dimensions of anything online. I’m quite in love with it.

Now resize the image to those dimensions. If it is an image that can be distorted make sure you have maintain aspect ratio checked.

Add in any else you’d like: A background color, words, anything. Play with it.

If you need a different font try dafont.

If you want a background image try Digiscrap Depot’s freebie papers.

When you’ve made a brilliant button upload it to either photobucket or flicker. Copy the direct link code and post it into this code where it says Image URL in blue.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, is used to being in control—even when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority…

They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena…

Opinion:

I loved this book as I did the first in the series. The love story is one for the ages, with lines such as “We die, we die together. That’s the deal.” Raphael loves Elena so much it’s palatable. Elana struggles with the control that love comes with.

Elana is haunted by old memories and she struggles with the feeling that it is all her fault. She has a depth of character that I often miss when reading.

The darkness that surrounds this book is alleviated only by the beauty of the Refuge and the friendship with Illium. He is beautiful, kind, and a great friend for Elana in a place that is not her own.
I hope Elana and Raphael have children. Elana needs a family of her own and Raphael would be a great father.

It’s a great book, with passion, action, heartbreaking pain, and hope.

From Goodreads:
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, is used to being in control—even when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority…

In one word: Amazing.

Good, but not as amazing as the first one.

Touchingly sad, but shows how devoted Rose is.

The action and plot were superb as always. This storyline certainly pulled on my heart strings.

This isn't my favorite in the series, but it is still great.

I freaking love the last book in this series!

If you haven’t read this series, seriously go get it now.

Why I want:

Seems very suspenseful.

Why yes, it is 5 a.m on Saturday morning. What in the world am I doing up at? Well, the hubby had to go to work and I woke up before him to make him coffee. And yes, I think this should nominate me for best wife award.

I remembered I didn’t prepare anything for today so I figured I’d do a week wrap-up.

What I read this week:

Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly-I'll just say this since the review won’t be out for another month. I freaking loved this book. It’s been one that I can’t get out of my head. I feel like I should be able to hang out with Willow.

What I'm reading now:

I'm currently reading Archangel's Consort by Nanlini Singh. I've been going through this series since I read a bloggers top 5 paranormal post, sadly I can't remember where or I'd link you.

What I'll be reading next:

Huntress by Malinda Lo. I'll also be hosting a giveaway for this book for the Japan Giveaway Blog Hop.

So that is what's up with me, if there is any posts that you like to bring my attention to please link me. I haven't had a chance to get through my Google reader this week so I'm behind getting around to everyone.
