432 pgs., Paperback
Personal Copy
First in Midnight Breed Series

From the Back Cover:

INSATIABLE DESIRE. ENDLESS SEDUCTION. ONE TOUCH IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle's deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night--or this man--is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed--a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite.
Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind--and the unwitting humans existing alongside them--from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.

Here, in the arms of the Breed's formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all . . . .

Opinion

I probably will not continue with this series. It’s simply too high on the erotic scale and not enough on the girl being all kick-ass. She does have a power, but it’s not really enough to compensate for the fact that she basically allows Lucan to date rape her and doesn’t even have a problem with it. So no, I would not recommend this. It’s also too dark of a read on it’s own without the whole dream sex thing.

Waiting on Wednesday

In style of Breaking the Spine’s meme, I am waiting on This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. This really shouldn’t be a surprise if you’ve read my review on the first in the series. Currently, I’m reading the second book in her spin off series Night Huntress World.

thissideof-mm-c-185x300
Danger waits on both sides of the grave
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance…
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing.  A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally”—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war. …to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.
What are you waiting on?

First in Immortals Series

Summary From St. Martin’s Griffin

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch. Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste...

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition. He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets. Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head. She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is. Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

Opinion

Evermore had a slow start, but it picked up and by the end I was craving the next in the series. Riley is probably my favorite character although she has a minor part in the story. Many of the characters seem vain, immature, and simply unlikable. The plot is redeems this story. The trials that the couple goes through helps them to grow. It’s a fun read especially for the younger crowd. I wouldn’t suggest this series to those younger than 14 as their are issues (especially later in the series), but those a little more mature may be annoyed by the characters in this book. Not to say this is a bad book. The aspects of pain, loss, and not fitting in make Ever easily identifiable for most.

First in Chicagoland Vampire Series

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.
Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn't exactly glamorous, but it was mine. I was doing fine until Chicago's vampires announced theirexistence to the world-and then a rogue vampire attacked me. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker... and this one decided the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead.

Turns out my savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now I've traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan "Lord o' the Manor" Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four hundred year old vampire, he has centuries' worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude-and servitude. Right...

But my burgeoning powers (all of a sudden, I'm surprisingly handy with some serious weaponry), an inconvenient sunlight allergy, and Ethan's attitude are the least of my concerns. Someone's still out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches?

My initiation into Chicago's nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war-and there will be blood...

Opinion

I would definitely recommend this book.  It has enough action to keep my attention, but not so much action that it doesn’t delve into the characters. Merit is brave, loyal, and doesn’t let money talk. Her fathers constant usage of her for power, money, and prestige has left her with issues that are brought to attention when she is unwillingly changed by Ethan. Although this series will undoubtedly have romantic elements Merit is not involved with anyone directly in this book. This doesn’t deter from the overall greatness of it, but actually makes it better. Merit is strong enough to resist her “liege” and the sexual tension she feels for him. This is a great fun read.

First in Night Huntress Series
Summary from Avon

Flirting With The Grave…
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father – the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unlikely partnership.
In exchange for help finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner – are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side … and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Opinion
This is my favorite series to date. Cat is fearless, incredibly witty, and holds her own against a Master vampire. She is a fully vetted character and is the girl next door with a twist. She stands up for those that are weaker than her and is loyal to those she loves even when they don’t deserve it. She is my favorite kick-ass female in paranormal fiction. The choices she makes are unselfish even when they are completely the wrong decision to make. Bones is one of the most powerful vampires in the world and yet he mostly treats Cat as an equal. When we meet her she is killing the undead without prejudice until she meets Bones when she finds that she is wrong about her preconceived notions about vampires as a side effect of her indoctrination from her mother.
